Overview

Dark spots, or age spots, on the skin are caused by sun exposure for long periods of time. These spots can happen to anyone at any age, but they usually form in men and women over the age of 50. The dark age spots on the skin happen when the amount of melanin in the skin decreases. When the skin is exposed to harmful ultraviolet rays from the sun for long periods of time, the collagen and elastin in the skin break down. Collagen and elastin keep the skin looking young, and without enough in the skin, dark age spots form. The spots can be diminished by avoiding ultraviolet rays, using natural ingredients, and cleaning the skin correctly.

Step 1

Avoid direct sunlight. Ultraviolet rays are one of the most harmful things you can expose your skin to. If you have to be in the sun, make sure you wear a hat, sunscreen and long sleeves and long pants. If your skin has to be exposed to the sun, make sure you wear sunscreen with a high SPF.

Step 2

Use buttermilk. Buttermilk contains a natural bleach that will gradually fade the dark spots on your skin. Buttermilk help your skin cells regenerate at a faster rate, helping replace the damaged cells in your dark spots and fading their color. Buy buttermilk at the grocery store, soak a cotton ball in the liquid and rub it on your dark spots. Hold the cotton ball on the dark spots for 10 minutes.

Step 3

Use lemon juice. Like buttermilk, lemon juice also contains a natural bleach that will help fade the dark spots on your skin. Buy lemon juice at the grocery store, soak a cotton ball with the juice and rub it on your dark spots. Hold the cotton ball on the dark spots for 10 minutes.

Step 4

Exfoliate your skin. Buy a skin scrubber and a mild cleanser at the pharmacy. When you are taking a bath or a shower, put some of the cleanser on the scrubber and rub the area surrounding your age spots. The scrubbing motion removes the top layer of your skin, which is filled with dead skin cells. These dead skin cells contain the most amount of melanin, or the chemical that makes your age spots look darker. Exfoliate your skin several times a week to remove any new dead skin that built up since the last time you used the scrubber.
