Acne Treatment That Does Not Contain Benzoyl Peroxide Acne Treatment That Does Not Contain Benzoyl Peroxide

Overview

There are many different treatments available for acne. Although benzoyl peroxide is a component in many of these creams and cleansers, it is not necessary for an acne-treating product to contain benzoyl peroxide to be effective. Other treatments are effective in treating acne.

Types

Salicylic acid is a common ingredient in over-the-counter (OTC) acne treatments. There are several prescription strength options as well. Tretinoin and Tazorac are two of the retinoids commonly prescribed for acne treatment. Prescription-strength antibiotics are also an effective treatment. Accutane is an oral medication that is an effective treatment for stubborn cases of acne, according to the University of Maryland Medical Center (UMMC).

Features

Salicylic acid works by unclogging the pores, according to the National Institutes of Health. This allows the excess sebum to escape, clearing up acne. Prescription retinoids work in much the same way, clearing pores and reducing swelling. Antibiotics kill bacteria that cause acne and reduce swelling. Exactly how Accutane works is not clear, but UMMC reports that it may reduce sebum production.

Effects

Any type of topical acne treatment can cause redness, irritation and dry skin. To reduce the risk of developing these side effects, apply the product lightly and apply only every few days to start. The skin will build up a tolerance to the product, and you can gradually work up to the recommended daily amount. If you have persistent redness or irritation, speak with your health care provider about alternative products. Although sunscreen is always important, it is especially important when using these products, as they make the skin more sensitive.

Benefits

All of these acne treatments are effective. It may take several weeks to see results, but it is important to continue to use the product as directed. Switching to different products when you don't see results as soon as you like can cause skin irritation.

Warning

Accutane carries a serious risk of birth defects in unborn fetuses when taken by pregnant woman. It is important that any woman taking this medication take a pregnancy test before beginning treatment and use dependable birth control for the duration of the treatment period. Pregnant women should also refrain from using retinoid products.
